There are loads of things that can inspire creatives like me, but one of the core things that really gets me rolling is listening to music.
I listen to it constantly, whether it’s while working at the Evil Day Job, driving in the car, doing design work, or just writing. I’m even listening to music now as I write this blog post, being thoroughly antisocial to my train buddies who I’m sitting with. I always have some sort of soundtrack rolling about in my head. It just seems to make life all the more richer.
When I was writing the ending of Tijuana Nights, I had a constant soundtrack of songs blasting in my ears. It wasn’t music that matched the book in any way, and it wasn’t even part of the original writing soundtrack I had built for writing the book to, but it had dark melodic tunes to it, which is precisely what I needed for the character I was writing.
The lyrics are only part of the inspiration. For me it’s more of the emotive feelings that I get from the music that inspires me. There’s a wonderful piece of music that was introduced to me a few months back, and seriously, every time I listen to it when I’m not in the mood for anything, I get the sudden urge to start writing. It’s almost as if it’s my muse kicking my arse into action. It’s definitely not the usual style of music that I would listen to (as I’m a Drum and Bass girl, through and through), but there’s just something about it that sparks my creativity.
Maybe this track could inspire other creative too… or maybe it’s just me.

Music is one of the main things that inspires me too – and I have it on almost constantly throughout my life as well. As far as writing goes it completely depends on the character, or sometimes the setting within which I’m writing as to what music I listen to. Every one of my characters enjoys their own playlist and half of them are full of music that I would only rarely listen to for pleasure, so I completely understand where you are coming from here!

Nice to see you rear your head, Emma! hehe
Character specific playlists are damn brilliant. I know what you mean about music for characters that isn’t your usual cup of tea – but all characters are different, and so they are also desearving of theor own musical tastes as well 🙂
Awesome of you to stop by and hang out at Parchment Place with me 🙂 xx

Same. I love to write while listening to music. Heavy metal is my favourite cup of tea.

LOL – Heavy metal sometimes features in my playlists, I must admit! It really depends on the feel of the book that I want – and different types of music really help me get into the zone for that!

Music inspires me but I can’t write and listen to music. I shut my eyes and drift off into another world without writing it down! What a lovely blog post, nice to follow and connect through a to z http://aimingforapublishingdeal.blogspot.co.uk

Lovely to meet you through A-Z as well! Pleased you liked the post 🙂
I know a hep of writers who can’t write to music and all they surround themselves with is silence. I totally understand that.
Definitely not the way I work – I need the music in my ears to help me totally zone out of the real world and into my book 🙂 I can’t read to music though, unless it’s something like classical music, and then I’m okay 🙂

My guilty pleasure is top forty when I’m writing. It’s usually cheesy as hell and not at all appropriate, but I find myself typing to the beat and the words flow a lot easier when I’m not paying a lot of attention. There’s something about the cheesy lyrics and the timing of when they come on that keep me writing through a lot of those little blocks.

Top forty is actually great – and you’re so right about the rhythm side of things. If it lulls you into your creative world – why not, right?
