There are loads of things that can inspire creatives like me, but one of the core things that really gets me rolling is listening to music.

I listen to it constantly, whether it’s while working at the Evil Day Job, driving in the car, doing design work, or just writing. I’m even listening to music now as I write this blog post, being thoroughly antisocial to my train buddies who I’m sitting with. I always have some sort of soundtrack rolling about in my head. It just seems to make life all the more richer.

When I was writing the ending of Tijuana Nights, I had a constant soundtrack of songs blasting in my ears. It wasn’t music that matched the book in any way, and it wasn’t even part of the original writing soundtrack I had built for writing the book to, but it had dark melodic tunes to it, which is precisely what I needed for the character I was writing.

The lyrics are only part of the inspiration. For me it’s more of the emotive feelings that I get from the music that inspires me. There’s a wonderful piece of music that was introduced to me a few months back, and seriously, every time I listen to it when I’m not in the mood for anything, I get the sudden urge to start writing. It’s almost as if it’s my muse kicking my arse into action. It’s definitely not the usual style of music that I would listen to (as I’m a Drum and Bass girl, through and through), but there’s just something about it that sparks my creativity.

Maybe this track could inspire other creative too… or maybe it’s just me.
